Cells grow in the body in a normal manner . When there are enough cells needed for a particular part of the body these cells cease multiplying. Sometimes the cells can grow abnormally. In its self this isn’t dangerous and they can also often form a clump also known as a benign tumor. These benign tumors grow slowly and can be removed or simply ignored.

However at other times cells can grow abnormally, this abnormal growth is called cancer and can spread and invade other parts of the body (metastatic cancer) often forming clumps or masses called malignant tumors. Some cancers like leukemia cancer of the bone marrow or blood do not cause tumors.

Our bodies do have ways of repairing abnormal cells but these processes do not work so well as we age. For this reason cancer is primarily a disease found in older people.

Medical treatment of cancer is called oncology. Doctors who specialise in cancer treatments are known as oncologists.
